Beware of public protest by shadowy group, EFCC warns Nigerians

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a public alert regarding a suspected plot by an unidentified group to organize a protest against the Commission.

In a statement on Wednesday by its Head, Media & Publicity Dele Oyewale, the EFCC revealed that the suspected group has been actively using social media to recruit young Nigerians, including students, to oppose the anti-graft agency.

It noted that the campaign, which is being framed as a resistance to the EFCC’s enforcement of cybercrime laws, has raised significant concern within the Commission.

According to the EFCC, there is growing evidence that corrupt individuals under investigation or prosecution are behind this effort, intending to exploit the protest to incite a national uprising that could jeopardize national peace and security.

Acknowledging the right to protest, the EFCC emphasized that it will not tolerate any disruptions to law and order, particularly around its offices nationwide.

In collaboration with other security agencies, the anti-graft agency disclosed it is taking proactive measures to address any threats to the country’s stability.

The Commission also urged parents, guardians, and heads of educational institutions to ensure that young people are not manipulated into participating in what it described as a proxy war orchestrated by corrupt interests.

The statement further stressed that the agency’s fight against corruption and cybercrime is crucial for safeguarding the future of Nigerian youths, warning that the country’s global reputation could suffer if it is seen as a haven for fraudsters.
