BREAKING: Court sacks Ebonyi governor Umahi, deputy for dumping PDP for APC

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi and his deputy Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe for defecting from the People’s Democratic Party PDP to the All Progressives Congress APC.

In his ruling on Tuesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo, said the mandate Umahi and his deputy got when they won the March 9, 2019 governorship election in the state belonged to the PDP and so the party should not be deprived of its mandate.

The judge therefore ordered both men to vacate the seats, while also ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to receive names of candidates from the PDP to replace them.

“The votes in any election in Nigeria are to political parties, and not candidates,” Justice Ekwo said.
