BREAKING: Protesters storm Kaduna Govt House, demand El-Rufai be arrested

Demonstrators named Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance (KCWGG), stormed the Government House in Kaduna on Thursday and demanded the arrest and investigation of the state’s former governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

They requested that the current governor, Uba Sani, extend an invitation to members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apprehend and prosecute El-Rufai regarding the N423 billion indictment against his administration.

The demonstrators held signs with various messages while also singing songs of support.

Governor Uba Sani at a town hall meeting on March 30, 2024, disclosed that the state was saddled with a significant debt load of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities left over from the previous administration. This, he said resulted in the inherited debt being serviced with more than 70% of the state’s allotment.

An ad hoc committee was established by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to look into the state’s financial transactions between May 29, 2015, and May 29, 2023.

On June 5th, 2024, the committee under the direction of Barrister Henry Danjuma Magaji presented its findings, which included a substantial amount of unexplained funds and anomalies in financial transactions.

The report emphasised financial mismanagement, loan diversion, contractor overpayment, and a lack of openness in the use of public monies.
