BREAKING: Tambuwal resigns as Chairman PDP Governors’ Forum, to emerge DG Atiku campaign

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has resigned as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum.

Tambuwal announced his resignation at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting going on in Abuja.

His resignation is not unconnected with the crisis of confidence rocking the party since former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.

The Sokoto governor fell out with his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike after the former declared support for Atiku at the presidential primaries.

It was believed that Tambuwal’s last minute withdrawal as an aspirant at the presidential primaries paved the way for Atiku to defeat Wike who came second.

This created a gulf in the friendship between Wike and Tambuwal, with the Rivers State governor as one of the major backers of Tambuwal at the party’s presidential primaries in 2019, where he was up against Atiku.

Wike has been implacable ever since, after he was also overlooked as Atiku’s running mate in favour of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Himself and his supporters, fellow governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) have continued to talk tough, asking the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu to resign for what they tagged marginalisation against the South.

A source close to Atiku told WesternPost that Tambuwal is expected to be named Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council after his resignation.

WesternPost had earlier reported that Makinde was approached to take up the position, but he declined due to his closeness to Wike.
