‘Christian a unifying force in Nigeria’ – Femi Otedola

Business mogul and philanthropist, Femi Otedola, has paid glowing tribute to the late football legend, Christian Chukwu, describing him as a unifying figure whose contributions to Nigerian football remain etched in the nation’s history.

Reacting to the news of Chukwu’s passing, Otedola said the former Super Eagles captain and head coach was a patriot who used football to foster unity across the country.

“The sudden passing of the legendary Christian Chukwu, former captain and head coach of the Super Eagles, has come as a rude shock to me,” Otedola said in a statement.

“As one of Nigeria’s patriots, Christian Chukwu creatively used the game of football as a unifying force for us as individuals and the nation in general. His footballing career as the captain and subsequently coach of the national team remain legendary and fully etched in the annals of our national history.”

Otedola also recalled his personal intervention in 2019 when Chukwu was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which affected his legs. He said he had stepped in to support Chukwu’s medical care in the United Kingdom, a move that gave the former player “a new lease of life.”

“My condolences go out to his entire family and to his fans all over the world. May you all find comfort during this difficult time,” Otedola added.

“May his soul rest in peace.”
