EFCC disowns list of alleged corrupt ex-governors under investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it is not affiliated with a purported report that has been making the rounds in the media, which purports to reveal the list of former governors under investigation for possible corruption.

A statement by the Commission’s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale said
that the claim published in a news outlet with the heading “EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex-Governors that Embezzled N2.187 trillion” is misleading and untrue because the Commission never made the aforementioned list available or took questions from media outlets regarding its investigation of former governors.

The EFCC added that the so-called list is a deceptive creation created for purposes known only to the writers themselves.

The anti-graft agency said the news is incorrect and deceptive, urging the public to ignore it.

It recommended that the media make an effort to verify information about subjects being investigated with the Commission in order to prevent deceiving the public with fabricated or erroneous stories.

“The public is enjoined to ignore the report as it is false and misleading.

“The media is advised to endeavour to crosscheck facts pertaining to matters under investigation with the Commission to avoid misleading the public with false and inaccurate reports,” part of the statement reads.
