EXCLUSIVE: Senate forms powerful caucus to pick next senate president

Sharing is caring!

Ahead of the election of presiding officers of the National Assembly, the present Senate has formed a powerful lobby group.

This, WesternPost learnt, is with a view to ensuring that the next principal officers of the chamber, particularly Senate President, comes from within its circle.

The caucus wants to influence the election in a way that one of them can become the next Senate President.

Already, the Senators have pulled resources together to actualise their dream.

The lobby group is another idea, in addition to the ranking policy, the lawmakers had devised to protect themselves and fence off new entrants in the race for National Assembly leadership.

Two prominent members of the present class of Senators namely; Jubril Barau from Kano State and Mohammed Sani Musa from Niger State are at present eyeing the top office. Senators Osita Izunazo from Imo State, Orji Kalu (Abia) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) are also in the race.

It was learnt however that the present Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, is also quietly nursing re-election if the opportunity presents itself.

Westernpost learnt that under the plan, Senator Akpabio, believed to be a leading candidate, may come under the hammer.

Akpabio is alleged by some Senators to have worked against their interest when he was Minister of Niger Delta under the outgoing administration.

For that, he was said to have been marked down by the Senators.

It was also learnt that a principal leader in the Senate has an axe to grind with him for allegedly backing down from supporting him in the All Progressives Congress presidential race.
