FG begins clearing of drainages on Lagos Federal roads after flooding

Following the flooding resulting from the rainfall in Lagos on Wednesday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed the clearing of drainages on Federal roads in the state.

Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

The order was issued after Wednesday’s rainfall in Lagos disrupted commercial activities.

Kesha said in the statement: “The minister has directed the desilting of drains along federal roads in the state with a view to de-flooding the highways .

“Our teams are currently deployed to assess the situation while the desilting of drains along the affected roads are currently being carried out.

“The ministry understands the inconvenience caused by these flash floods and is committed to eliminating the disruptions caused thereafter.”

Long hours of rain had caused roads and homes to become flooded as thousands of people were overwhelmed by the flood waters. Vehicles were grounded on the roads, and in certain parts of the states, schools were closed.

A two-story structure in the Mushin neighbourhood of Lagos also collapsed.

Various parts of Lagos impacted by the floods include Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Gbagada, Bojije, Epe, Sangotedo, Ibeju-Lekki, Awoyaya, Labora, Abijon and Eredo.

Meteorologists have predicted that Lagos will experience more rainfalls in the coming days.
