Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday officially launched the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to building a nation where every Nigerian worker can thrive and achieve their full potential. The launch took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and drew participation from government officials, labour leaders, and stakeholders in the private sector.

Speaking at the event, Shettima emphasized that the programme is a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s vision to prepare Nigerians for both current and future job markets. He noted that the initiative is a direct response to the evolving world of work, driven by rapid technological advancements and shifting employment structures.

“LEEP is the fulfilment of President Tinubu’s promise to build a national ecosystem where every Nigerian worker can thrive, and where technology enhances rather than threatens our labour market,” the Vice President said. He added that LEEP aims to upskill and reskill citizens to make them competitive in a fast-changing global economy.

Highlighting the shift from traditional employment to digital and gig-based roles, Shettima noted that the future of work is being redefined by automation, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms. “We’re no longer living in a world of traditional employment structures. Machines and AI are redefining work as we know it. But within these changes lies a sea of opportunity—if we are bold enough to seize it,” he stated.

Shettima commended the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment for spearheading the initiative and called for collaborative efforts from all sectors. He urged private sector players, trade unions, civil society organisations, and global partners to work alongside the government to ensure LEEP’s long-term success. “This is not a task the government can undertake alone. It is a collective assignment,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, described LEEP as a proactive response to the “clear and imminent danger” of unemployment in the country. She said the programme will drive nationwide vocational training and skills development to enhance job readiness and economic productivity.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who was present at the launch, pledged the support of state governors in the successful implementation of LEEP. He noted that the programme, if properly executed, would not only reduce unemployment but also help combat insecurity and engage Nigerian youth meaningfully.

The LEEP initiative is expected to roll out in phases across the country, targeting millions of Nigerians with training, tools, and connections to job opportunities in various sectors, including agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and services.
