First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Friday officially declared open the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship.
In her opening remarks, the First Lady emphasized the importance of the championship in promoting gender equality in sports, stating that the athletes represent not just their nations but also the limitless potential of African women.
“Each of you represents your nation, as well as the unlimited potential of African womanhood. Seeing these talented young African women gathered here, poised to showcase their exceptional skills and sporting excellence, fills my heart with profound joy and optimism for our continent’s future,” she said.

She encouraged the athletes to embrace discipline, teamwork, and resilience, highlighting that these values extend beyond the volleyball court. Tinubu also urged them to handle both victory and defeat with grace, reminding them that they serve as role models to young girls across Africa.
The tournament, which will run for two weeks, features 16 teams competing for the championship title, with Nigeria represented by the Nigeria Customs Service and the Chief of Naval Staff Strikers. The competition also serves as a qualifier for the World Championship, with the top two teams securing automatic spots.
The opening game saw the Nigeria Customs Service team face off against Mayo of Cameroon in a highly anticipated clash between familiar rivals. The championship promises intense competition as Africa’s best clubs battle for supremacy.

As the Grand Patron of the championship, First Lady Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that empower women through sports and other developmental platforms.
The 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship will conclude on July 14, with the winners earning their place among the world’s elite teams.
