A delegation from the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) paid a visit to the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday to discuss the proposed Lagos Electrification Agency Law.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, included discussions with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, as disclosed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele.

According to the statement, their visit came on the heels of the bill’s successful second reading during a recent plenary session, where Dr. Obasa committed the bill to the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, which has been given a two-week mandate to report back to the House.

The statement disclosed that the bill aims to repeal the Lagos Electric Power Reform Law of 2018 and establish the Lagos Electricity Market, stating that its primary goal is to create a robust commercial and technical regulatory framework to ensure reliable and universal access to electricity for all Lagos residents.

In addition, the bill proposes the creation of the Lagos State Electrification Fund to deliver reliable electricity to underserved areas.

Reacting to the development, Hon. Sobur Oluwa, chairman of the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized the importance of the bill, stating it would allow Lagos State to regulate and transmit its power supply independently.

According to him, the deliberations and subsequent actions on this bill are critical as Lagos State continues to address its energy challenges and strives to enhance its infrastructure for the benefit of its residents.

The GAC delegation featured prominent figures such as Cardinal James Odumbaku, Senator Anthony Adefuye, Otunba Henry Ajomale, Dr. Yomi Finnih, and Otunba Femi Pedro.
