Inferno: Gov Makinde visits Aleshinloye Market, pledges reconstruction

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured traders at Aleshinloye Market, Ibadan, that his administration will restructure the market to prevent future fire outbreaks. This follows the recent inferno that destroyed goods worth millions of naira in March.

Speaking during an inspection visit on Tuesday, Makinde expressed concern that despite the presence of a fire station within the market, it could not contain the blaze. He emphasized the need for improved infrastructure to mitigate such incidents.

The governor also announced that the state government has provided palliatives to support traders affected by the fire. He pledged further assistance in collaboration with Ibadan South-West Local Government and Ibadan South LCDA.

Makinde directed the suspension of a planned demolition of a section of the market until an alternative space is arranged for affected traders. He stressed the importance of ensuring minimal disruption to their businesses.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to making the fire station fully operational, ensuring it can respond effectively to emergencies in the future.

“We have to ensure that the fire station is functional. It is crucial to organize the market properly to prevent such incidents from recurring,” he stated.

The governor also called for greater awareness among traders on fire safety measures, urging them to store flammable materials with caution.

“It is better to prevent fire incidents than to contain them. We must work together to create a safer market environment,” he added.
