Kanu is detained in line with the tenets of law- Justice Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, has said the prolonged detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was in accordance to the tenets of the law.

Fagbemi assured that no citizen will be detained against the laws of the country.

The minister made this known in a recent media briefing held as part of the Ministerial Sectoral Updates to mark President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office.

Fagbemi further emphasized the distinct differences between the cases of Kanu and Omoyele Sowore, a political activist.

When questioned about the release of Sowore and Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho, who was recently freed by the Federal Government, Fagbemi reiterated that Kanu’s situation was unique.

“Kanu is being held under the rule of law,” underlining the legal processes involved,” Fagbemi said.

“Nnamdi Kanu and Sowore’s cases are not the same. If I see Sowore, I don’t know him; if I see Nnamdi Kanu, I don’t know him. Let’s wait for the decision of the court. No one will be held outside the laws of the country,” he added.

The Minister’s comments come amid ongoing scrutiny and comparisons of how the government handles various high-profile detainees.
