Kwara govt promises reconstruction of Geri-Alimi Diamond Underpass

Kwara State government on Monday said it would bring back the contractor that constructed the Geri-Alimi Diamond Underpass in Ilorin West Local Government Area for poor job.

The N3.7billion road was constructed by the government of AbdulFatah Ahmed.

Commissioner for Works and Transport, Rotimi Iliasu, while on an inspection tour of the bad portion of the road on Monday blamed the contractor for doing shoddy work.

He noted that the contractor would be brought back to site to fix the failed portion.

“It’s our job to come and fix it. We will cut out this section, rebuild from the base to make sure it is properly done. We have inspected the drainage; the drainage is not blocked. We don’t have issues with drainage. We have a duty to do it well and we’ll do it well,” he said.

The commissioner added that If the road was properly constructed, it should last about 10-12 years before maintenance could commence.

He said: “As we can all see, the road has failed. But as government, our duty is to make sure there’s no failure, our duty is to come here and repair it.

“From July 2019, when the new administration came in, repair works started on this road when there was complaint of pipe leakage. Also, a section that leads to Asa dam was cut off in August 2019. That was three months into the new administration.”

He noted that some people alleged that some excavated materials were reused by the contractor when they were supposed to get materials from ‘burrowed pit’
