Labour Congress Commission orders nationwide picketing of LP offices
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed labour members across the country to picket all the Labour Party(LP) offices nationwide over the lingering political crisis in the party.
This was contained in a circular addressed to the chairpersons of all NLC State Councils/Political Commissions dated March 19, 2024.
The secular titled: “Picketing All Labour Party Offices Nationwide,” was jointly signed by Chairperson and Secretary, NLC Political Commission, Comrade Titus Amba and Comrade Chris Uyot respectively.
The picketing according to the statement was hinged on the unilateral decision of the National Chairman of the Party, Mr Julius Abure, to hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, amid financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC.
It reads: “We bring you fraternal greetings from the Nigeria Labour Congress. Sequel to a meeting of the NLC National Political Commission and the leadership of the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees which took place virtually on the 19th of March 2024, it was resolved as follows:
“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.
“In view of the soon to be held all-inclusive national convention of the Labour Party, the NLC State Councils and the NLC Political Committees should immediately embark on a statewide mobilisation of workers to join the NLC Political Commission and the Labour Party.
“The NLC State Council and State Political Committees should work with our civil society allies, students, traders and professionals to ensure that the picketing and mobilisation are successfully executed.”
On March 16, 2024 that the leadership of the NLC passed a vote of no confidence on the Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure, over allegations of corruption made against him.
But reacting the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) on March 17, called on the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, to resign from his current position if he must contest for the national chairmanship of the party.
The LP accused Ajaero of desperately seeking to replace its embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure.
