A tragic collision involving three commercial vehicles took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Ketu, Lagos, resulting in the death of a pedestrian and injuries to several others.

According to a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred around 6:45 am at Demuri Junction inward Kosofe.

The accident was said to have been caused by a speeding Toyota Hiase Bus (NSW 216 XA), loaded with perishable items, which lost control due to brake failure.

The bus would collide with two Volkswagen commercial buses, claiming the life of a male pedestrian waiting to board a bus at Ketu Bus Stop.

In a swift response, LASTMA personnel around the scene rescued a trapped female passenger from one of the Volkswagen buses and promptly handed her over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASMBUS) for medical attention.

The driver of the commercial bus was consequently apprehended on-site, with police from Alapere Police Station providing security backup during the rescue operations.

The statement added that Olawaye Olugbenga, Head of Zone 32 Ketu for LASTMA, led the evacuation of all vehicles involved to ensure smooth traffic flow in the area.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in his statement, urged pedestrians to use designated bus stops and cautioned drivers against over-speeding and neglecting vehicle maintenance to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
