Nigeria, China ink deal to drive renewable energy growth, power sector overhaul

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Energy Engineering Corporation Ltd (Energy China) and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF).

The agreement which was formalized on Thursday in Abuja, is aimed at accelerating renewable energy development and implementing critical power sector reforms.

Director-General of the ECN, Dr. Mustafa Abdullahi, described the partnership as a bold step toward addressing Nigeria’s long-standing energy challenges through innovation and collaboration. He noted that the MoU supports state-level energy planning and the expansion of solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy infrastructure.

“This collaboration aligns with recent constitutional reforms and the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023, which empower states to regulate their electricity markets,” Abdullahi said. “It is a testament to the Governors’ Forum’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s energy future.”

A key highlight of the agreement is the establishment of the Nigeria-China Renewable Energy Research Centre. The facility will focus on technological innovation, knowledge transfer, and human capacity development in the renewable energy sector.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, praised the ECN’s leadership and underscored the MoU’s role in expanding access to clean energy and driving sustainable economic growth.

Symbolic gifts were exchanged during the event to commemorate the deepening bilateral relationship between Nigeria and China, symbolizing mutual respect and shared commitment to a greener future.

Dr. Abdullahi expressed optimism that the partnership would attract significant investments, create jobs across states, and enhance Nigeria’s energy security. He reaffirmed the ECN’s commitment to supporting the federal government’s energy vision.
