Nigerians can now import goods via Benin Republic – NCS

Importers in Nigeria who intend to bring their goods through the Cotonou Ports in Benin Republic can now do so legally.

This decision emerged as a key outcome during the two-day visit of Mr. Alain Kinkati, the Director-General of Customs Service of Benin Republic, as outlined in a communique released at the conclusion of their meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), elaborated on the ongoing development, stating that the specific details of the framework are currently in progress.

This arrangement entails that goods bound for Nigeria will undergo assessment and duty payment in their country of origin, with these duties being credited to the Nigerian government through the Nigerian Customs Service.

Adeniyi hailed this framework as a significant stride towards regional integration and the facilitation of trade, done in close cooperation with counterparts from neighboring Benin Republic.

He also highlighted the reduction of trade barriers, with a commitment to further minimize checkpoints, achieved through collaboration with the police authorities.

Additionally, the Acting Customs chief disclosed plans to synchronize the NCS’s Information Technology system with that of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to combat vehicle smuggling into the country.

Furthermore, the Customs administration is working towards aligning its list of prohibited items with that of Benin Republic, a move aimed at enhancing the organization’s security functions.
