Nine injured in Lagos gas explosion

A tragic gas explosion rocked the Alayabiagba Community area of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area in Lagos State, causing injuries to nine individuals, including a pregnant woman, and widespread damage to property.

The incident, which occurred around 1 pm on Tuesday, sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, prompting a swift response from state fire fighters.

According to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion was triggered by a gas cylinder leakage, which ignited a high-tension cable, leading to a fire outbreak.

The incident took the intervention of LSFRS officials, aided by teams from Ajegunle and Sari-Iganmu Fire Stations, along with the Federal Fire Service, contained the blaze before it could spread further.

Regrettably , the aftermath of the explosion saw four commercial tricycles, six lock-up shops, and a bungalow destroyed, while neighboring structures, including a fuel service station, were spared.

Adeseye further revealed the injured individuals, ranging from children to adults, are currently receiving treatment at Ajeromi General Hospital and Gbagada Burnt & Trauma Centre, following initial first aid provided by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

“The incident which was curtailed in record time through the combined efforts of the Ajegunle and Sari-Iganmu Fire Stations of the LSFRS with the compliment of the Federal Fire Service left four commercial tricycles, six lock-up shops, a bungalow part of properties razed down while salvaging adjoining structures including a major fuel service station.

“However, nine peoples reportedly suffered different degrees of burnt injury including a pregnant woman, children and adults male and female that are recuperating at the Ajeromi General Hospital and Gbagada Burnt & Trauma Centre after some first aids by the Lagos State Ambulance Service,” she stated.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident as the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragic event.
