By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo

Chairman, Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Otunba Segun Oladitan said the commission will not be deterred by the boycott threat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oladitan, who spoke with journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday said the commission is going ahead to conduct the local government election come October 15, 2022 with or without the participation of PDP.

He maintained that non participation of PDP in the election will not stop the process.

Oladitan who said the commission has not received any official message of boycotting election from the PDP, noting that the party should participate in the election and later go to court to challenge it if it has any reservation.

“We have not received official message from PDP. Even at that, they shouldn’t have boycott the election because the sections of electoral act that PDP are laying claims on that we do not have right to conduct the election, we are aware of those sections.

“But instead of boycotting the election, they should have participated and let us go and try that in the court of law.

“Before we fix date for the conduct of the local government election, all political parties were involved and PDP representative was present,” he added.

It would be recalled that PDP had cited section 28 of the Electoral Act, 2022, which says no election can hold until a notice is given not later than 360 days before the said election.

The said Electoral Act also provides mandatorily in section 29 the period within which list of candidates must be published which is 180 days among other sections act.

The PDP said based on these sections, the planned local government election is illegal.
