The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State is in mourning following the death of one of its foremost leaders, Chief Yekini Adeojo, who passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Chief Adeojo, a renowned Ibadan-born businessman, elder statesman, and founding member of the PDP, died at an undisclosed location. Though the cause of death has not been revealed, sources say his remains will be laid to rest later today in accordance with Islamic rites.
In a statement signed by Honourable Michael Ogunsina, the Acting Publicity Secretary of the Oyo State PDP, the party described Adeojo’s death as a monumental loss. “Chief Yekini Adeojo was an elder statesman, a political colossus, and a pillar of democracy in Oyo State and Nigeria at large,” the statement read.
Adeojo served as the PDP’s first gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State during the 1999 elections, where he lost to Lam Adesina of the Alliance for Democracy.
He later became the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South) and was also a member of the PDP Board of Trustees. Over the years, he was a key player in the state’s political evolution and a mentor to many, including Governor Seyi Makinde.
Beyond politics, Chief Adeojo was deeply respected in business and religious circles. He held the titles of Seriki Musulumi of Yorubaland and Seriki Adinni of Yoruba Muslims, through which he championed peace, unity, and interfaith harmony.
“His legacy continues through his children, including Hon. Sheriff Adeojo, the Executive Chairman of Ido Local Government, and Hon. Elias Adeojo, Chairman of the Oyo State Water Corporation, along with many other accomplished children,” the party noted.
As a mark of respect, the Oyo PDP has directed all party flags to be flown at half-mast across the state. The party also extended its condolences to his family, friends, political associates, and the entire people of Oyo State, praying for Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
