Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo hosted former players of Rangers International at government House, Awka on Saturday to appreciate and honour their heroics.

The Governor revealed that he was an ardent lover of the Enugu-based football club as a young boy. He said some of the players who are in their old age now will be taken care of by the government. The Governor promised to enrol them on health insurance scheme and raised their pension from paltry N15,000 per month to N100,000 to enable them afford basic needs.

The Governor wrote in a social media post: “Today I hosted the Rangers International Football Club Legends at the Governor’s lodge Amawbia.

“Seeing many of this football Greats brought back memories of how playing football and the love for the round leather game became an addiction for me very early in life.

“While a few of them are no more, these ones I saw today showed great spirit and have not lost their sportsmanship in spite of the challenges of old age.

“I have made strong commitments to improving their welfare by ensuring that they are signed up to our comprehensive health insurance program. Henceforth, they shall be able to access quality healthcare at zero cost at our State teaching hospital and affiliate health institutions.

“I have also approved an increase in the monthly stipend of the 73-man membership of the Ex-Rangers international group from 15,000 Naira to 100,000 Naira. This will help them meet other basic economic and social needs, and it is our own way of expressing deep appreciation to these legends who expended much of their active years in the service of country.

“May Anambra Continue to Succeed!”
