Police derank officer, reprimand another over assault on members of public

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered the demotion of one policeman and the severe reprimand of another following complaints and video evidence of assault, discreditable conduct, and incivility towards members of the public at Emouha, Rivers State.

The incident was widely circulated on social media on Sunday 9th April, 2023.

According to a statement from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Adejoh Siaka has been reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, and Sergeant Ndiwa Kpuebari, who was present but took no steps to discourage the act, was severely reprimanded.

The statement also stated that Inspector Friday Obaka, who was later discovered to have been absent from the scene, was discharged unconditionally at the conclusion of the proceedings.

The three policemen will be posted out of Rivers State to other Commands and Formations to continue their police duties.

“The Inspector General of Police has therefore tasked officers and men of the Force to be diligent and uphold the lofty tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the statement signed by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer said.

“This action by the IGP sends a clear message to police officers across Nigeria that such behavior will not be tolerated and that they must uphold the professional standards of the police force,” it added.
