President Tinubu condemns Plateau killings, demands end to violence

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow and strong condemnation following the latest outbreak of violence in Plateau State, where over 40 people reportedly lost their lives in fresh communal clashes.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu sympathised with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Plateau State Government, and affected communities. He urged the governor to demonstrate the political will required to resolve the longstanding communal tensions fueling the violence.

“The ongoing violence between communities in Plateau State, rooted in misunderstandings between different ethnic and religious groups, must cease,” Tinubu said, calling on community, religious, and political leaders to unite and end the cycle of retaliatory attacks.

He disclosed that he has directed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the latest killings and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. “We cannot allow this devastation and the tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough,” the President warned.

President Tinubu stressed that beyond confronting the criminal elements responsible for the violence, the state leadership must address the deeper, underlying issues driving the unrest.

“These problems have persisted for more than two decades. We can no longer ignore them. It is time to tackle them fairly and find a lasting solution,” he added, noting that he had previously discussed the crisis with Governor Mutfwang and proposed pathways to peace.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting Plateau State in fostering dialogue, promoting social cohesion, and ensuring justice as part of long-term efforts to end the bloodshed.

The statement comes amid renewed concern over the persistent violence in Plateau, a state that has for years been plagued by deadly clashes between farming and herding communities, often along ethnic and religious lines.
