President Tinubu mourns Pope Francis, lauds his global legacy

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as a “humble servant of God” and a powerful voice for justice, peace, and the poor.
In an official statement issued on Monday, President Tinubu joined Catholic faithful and Christians around the world in mourning the death of the 266th Pope, whose papacy began in 2013 and left a lasting imprint on the global community.
“The world has lost a guiding light, a steadfast advocate for justice, and a tireless champion of the downtrodden,” President Tinubu said. “His Holiness served the Church and the Master of the Church until the very end.”
Reflecting on Pope Francis’ legacy, Tinubu highlighted his advocacy for the poor, migrants, and refugees, as well as his efforts to confront climate change and economic inequality. He also praised the Pope’s bridge-building across faiths and social divides, and his moral leadership in a complex global era.
President Tinubu recalled his 2025 Easter message, in which he had expressed joy at seeing the convalescing Pope deliver the traditional Easter Sunday blessing. “Alas, the Lord called him home a day after, making the world lose its most trenchant voice for justice and action against climate change,” he said.
The President extended condolences on behalf of the Nigerian government and people to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and Christians worldwide.
“As we mourn the late Pontiff, let us also celebrate his legacy. Let us honour him not with words alone but with action: by lifting those who are down, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every person,” Tinubu added.
