Rivers high court confirms PDP membership of Wike’s ally, 26 other lawmakers

The Rivers State High Court has confirmed that Martin Amaewhule, a key ally of Governor Nyesom Wike, along with 26 other members of the Rivers State Assembly, remain members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

This decision came as a result of a judgment delivered on Monday by Justice Okogbule Gbasam.

In his ruling, Justice Gbasam stated that the claimants failed to provide sufficient evidence that Amaewhule and the other lawmakers had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The judge emphasized that party membership can only be substantiated through official party registers or membership cards, not through televised ceremonies or verbal declarations.

The PDP had filed a motion to be included in the case and was subsequently added as the fourth defendant.

Justice Gbasam noted that since the names of the legislators are still listed in the PDP’s membership register, the state government is obliged to adhere to all laws passed by the Assembly.

Accordingly, the judgement implies that the lawmakers have not forfeited their seats and continue to be recognized as PDP members.
