UPDATE: Two die as train crushes BRT bus in Lagos

A passenger train on Thursday crushed a Lagos State government owned BRT staff bus at PWD junction, Ikeja.

The train was coming from Agege and met the BRT vehicle with the Lagos State government workers on board crossing the rail to link Ikeja GRA.

Permanent Secretary Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that two people died in the accident.

Oke-Osanyintolu in a statement, said the driver was trying to beat the train traffic signal when the accident occurred.

He said: “Investigation gathered revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the BRT bus driver while trying to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train rammed into the BRT bus.

“Unfortunately, two adults were confirmed dead and several people seriously injured.

“The injured victims have been administered first aid treatment by the agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials, well stabilized and being transported to trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.”

The accident has caused a gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for motorists coming from Oshodi to Shogunle and Ikeja-Along.
