A major disaster was averted in Oyo State on Tuesday when a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned in Ogbomoso.

The incident occurred at the Odo-Oba area along the Ogbomoso–Oyo Road, with the tanker landing in a nearby ditch. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that firefighters responded swiftly to prevent a potential explosion.

According to Akinyinka, the Oyo State Fire Services Agency (Ogbomoso Command) received a distress call at 10:25 a.m. and immediately deployed a team to the scene.

“Upon arrival, we found a DAF trailer loaded with 45,000 litres of PMS, which had somersaulted into a nearby ditch, causing petrol to gush out instantly,” he stated.

Firefighters quickly blanketed the area with a foam compound to neutralize the flammability of the spilled fuel and prevent any fire outbreak.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving to avoid similar incidents.
