Tribunal fines Multichoice Nigeria N150m, free one-month subscription

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) has imposed a N150 million on Multichoice Nigeria for contesting the tribunal’s jurisdiction.

The court Alsip  mandated the company to grant subscribers on its DStv and GOtv platforms one month of free service.

The ruling, delivered on Friday by a panel led by Justice Thomas Okosu, follows Multichoice Nigeria’s recent defiance of a court order.

In May 2024, the company had raised the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages, despite a tribunal injunction prohibiting such increases.

The tribunal had previously barred Multichoice Nigeria Limited from implementing the planned price hikes on its subscription tariffs and other service costs from May 1. Despite this, Multichoice proceeded with the increases, prompting the tribunal’s latest ruling.

According to the tribunal, this latest order is aimed at ensuring consumer protection and adherence to regulatory decisions.
