Two die as Abuja estate is submerged in flood after early morning rain

According to unverified accounts, two persons were reportedly carried away by the floods in the Lugbe neighbourhood of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja during an early Monday morning downpour.

The extended downpour severely damaged properties and left hundreds homeless as Trademore Estate was submerged.

A video circulated online showed the estate almost entirely submerged.

A woman in the video said, “This is Trademore Estate, federal government we are pleading, two persons just died now, the water took them away,” she screamed in the video. Two people were carried away by this flood; we beseech you, please. We are pleading with the FCT minister to please take action.

“See the Police Station is gone. These are people’s residences, and water is everywhere. Minister of FCT, Honourable Wike, please come to Trademore Estate, people are dying. Two people just died this morning, what a pity.”

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) promised to address the estate’s persistent flooding during the rainy season, but no action has been taken.

The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) declared in 2023 that it would destroy buildings on estate waterways and those on other estates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

However, the affected homeowners angrily disagreed with the government’s decision and took the matter to court.
