Shettima in Maiduguri, attends funeral of Borno’s former SSG

Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni and other dignitaries were in Maiduguri on Sunday to attend the funeral of Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa, immediate past Secretary to the Borno State Government.

The late SSG who died on Saturday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after a brief illness had served as SSG under then Governor Shettima between 2015 and 2019, and also served in same capacity under Governor Zulum’s administration from 2019 to 2023.

The late Shuwa was laid to rest at the Gwange cemetary after the funeral prayer by the Chief Imam of Borno, Imam Laisu Ibrahim Ahmed.

The Vice President described the late Shuwa as one of the last icons.

“We lost a colossus. He was the last of the titans and an icon with a huge institutional memory of how the system works. We are surely going to miss his wise counsel and intellect. No one is indispensable in life, but he was almost irreplaceable,” Shettima stated.

Mourners at the burial included the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar Ibn Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi who led other traditional rulers as well as former governors of Borno and Kebbi states, Maina Ma’aji Lawan and Atiku Abubakar Bagudu.

In attendance also were Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda and Senator-elect, Kaka Shehu Lawan, and other top government functionaries.
