We promised to build Nigeria, not new party- Obi

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has emphasized his commitment to rebuilding Nigeria rather than establishing a new political party.

Obi stated this while addressing Nigerians on X space hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, esponding to questions regarding his absence from the LP’s National convention held recently in Anambra State.

Citing the failure of party leadership to consult key stakeholders beforehand. Obi emphasized the importance of proper procedures to rejuvenate the party, highlighting his priority of nation-building over party creation.

The former Governor further threw his weight behind the call for a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement.

“We promised to build Nigeria, we did not promise to build a New Labour Party.

“It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process,” he said.

Recall that after the 2023 presidential elections, two rival factions led by Julius Abure and Apapa Lamidi, rose from the Labour Party , vying for dominance.

However, while the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) opposes Abure’s leadership and despite the embattled chairman facing some controversies recently, Abure was reelected during the national convention held in Anambra State.
