We’ll uphold Rotimi Sankore’s legacy, says ACDJ in memory of late journalist

In commemoration of the passing of its Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr Rotimi Sankore, who died one year ago, the Africa Centre for Development Journalism (ACDJ) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the lasting legacies he left behind.

In a statement signed by Deji Dosunmu, the ACDJ team described Sankore as “a champion of truth, justice, and human dignity” whose leadership was crucial in crafting narratives that went beyond the news and got to the core of important topics, such as migration, maternal health, freedom of speech and the rights of marginalised groups.

“Rotimi was more than a journalist. He fiercely advocated for democratic accountability, human rights, gender equality, and public health across the African continent.

“At the ACDJ, we were privileged to have been led by Rotimi on numerous projects that sought to elevate the quality and impact of development journalism in Africa,” the statement noted.

Convinced that his legacy lives on through the media and the emergence of Development Reporting, a journalism niche the departed championed, the ACDJ expressed its rededication to the principles he upheld, which include speaking truth to power, holding institutions accountable, and sharing the voices that are far too frequently ignored
