Youths storm Rivers local councils as LGA chairmen’s tenure ends

As the tenure of the 23 council chairmen in Rivers State ends today, some youths have reportedly besieged two local government secretariats.
Reports say youths closed down and paralysed activities at the Asari Toru Local Government Secretariat, on Monday.
A group of young people were also seen obstructing the main entrance of the Degema Local Government Area office.
The incident is connected to the ongoing legal dispute between the local government chairmen and the state government.
The council chairmen were sworn in three years ago during ex-governor Nyesom Wike’s administration.
As their tenure ends on June 17, controversies persist on what will happen next amidst the political crisis that pitched Governor Siminalayi Fubara against his predecessor and erstwhile benefactor, Nyesom Wike.
