In a disturbing turn of events, gunmen launched an assault on the Ilejemeje local government area secretariat in Ẹda-Oniyọ, Ekiti State, just days after armed Yoruba Nation agitators breached the Oyo State Government secretariat.

The attack, which unfolded on Tuesday, plunged the workplace into panic and disarray as employees scrambled to safety.

Reports indicate that the attackers, believed to hail from the Obbo-Ayegunle community in neighboring Kwara State, descended upon the secretariat with violence, firing multiple gunshots and sending workers fleeing in all directions.

Amidst the chaos, one individual reportedly sustained serious injuries, requiring urgent medical attention at the State Specialist Hospital in Iye-Ekiti.

The attack which started at about 10 am and lasted several hours, saw the hoodlums vandalized the secretariat building and other council property in the process.

While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, sources suggest longstanding land disputes between the neighbouring communities may have fueled the violence.

Speaking on the harrowing incident, the Eleda of Eda Oniyo community, Oba Awodipo Awolola, expressed concern over recent attacks in the area and highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

He further decried the absence of a police presence in the community, which has left residents vulnerable, exacerbating tensions and prompting calls for immediate action to prevent further lawlessness.

Similarly, Mr. Alaba Dada, Chairman of Ilejemaje Local Government, attributed the attacks to ongoing disputes over land.

He also highlighted the necessity for dialogue between Ekiti and Kwara State governments to address the root causes of the conflict and restore peace to the region.
