The Federal Government  in a move to ensure continuous development of the aviation sector in the country, has approved the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport.

Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde revealed this on Wednesday, confirming that the long-awaited upgrade of the Ibadan Airport, located in Alakia, will commence in the next three weeks.

The announcement was made during a meeting with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

The upgrade project will involve the construction of a new terminal, expansion of the runway, and other structural enhancements, to be executed by experts to meet international standards.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the upgrade is a pivotal part of his administration’s efforts to boost the state’s economy. Over the past five years, his government has focused on identifying and executing infrastructure projects critical to economic expansion, with the Ibadan Airport upgrade being a central element of this strategy.

He also highlighted ongoing investments in the 110-kilometre Ibadan Circular Road, indicating a broader commitment to infrastructure development. Importantly, he mentioned the consideration of the Air Force’s request for land for a post-retirement housing scheme along the Circular Road corridor.

“We have been in communication with the Presidency, and earlier this week, we received confirmation that the President has graciously approved our request for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport.

“I will be in Abuja soon to finalize the documentation. Within three weeks, the project will commence, including the runway expansion and new terminal construction,” Governor Makinde stated.

The governor also acknowledged the Air Force’s role in maintaining security in Oyo State, particularly through collaboration with Operation Burst.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing infrastructure projects around the Air Force Base in Ajia, Ibadan, including roads to facilitate easy movement for personnel and equipment.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar praised Governor Makinde as a visionary leader and thanked him for his support to the Air Force.

He commended the governor’s focus on economic development and enhancing security in the state, noting the acquisition of 60 hectares of land for the Air Force Base and the provision of security vehicles as commendable efforts.

He also urged the governor to expedite the completion of the 10km Ajia-Airport Road to aid the Force’s operations.
