PDP NWC passes vote of confidence In Damagum

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in preparation for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Party on Thursday, has expressed full confidence in the Party’s Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, stated this on Wednesday, revealing that the decision was reached at the conclusion of the NWC’s 584th meeting held at the Party’s National Secretariat on Tuesda.

He emphasized that this decision acknowledges the Acting National Chairman’s efforts to stabilize and reposition the PDP as Nigeria’s primary opposition party.

The NWC also affirmed its dedication to ensuring the continuous stability, growth, and triumph of the party.

Ologunagba said: “The Deputy National Chairman (South) Amb. Taofeek Arapaja presided over the motion for Vote of Confidence on the Acting National Chairman which was moved by the National Vice Chairman (South East) Chief Ali Odefa and seconded by the National Treasurer, Hon. Yayari Mohammed.”

Recall that the PDP had been enmeshed in a series of internal crisis after the 2023 election, with some stakeholders calling for leadership change and the suspension of Nyesom Wike, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who was accused of allegedly working against the party.

Since assuming the role of acting Chairman, Damagum has faced significant opposition, particularly from the North Central geopolitical zone, where Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the suspended National Chairman, originates, as they seek to see out Ayu’s tenure.

However, there are reports indicating that factions loyal to Wike within the PDP are striving to keep Damagum in the chairman’s position to complete Ayu’s term.

Efforts to express confidence in Damagum by minority lawmakers in the House of Representatives were thwarted on Tuesday by a coalition of opposition lawmakers led by Ikenga Ugochinyere.

Thus, the vote of confidence by the NWC could be linked to efforts within the party to ensure Damagum’s confirmation as Chairman.
