PDP, Wike versus Atiku: Wike wins Round One

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike may have won Round One in the protracted leadership supremacy battle within the opposition PDP with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The party’s governors indicated on Thursday that only the PDP National Executive Committee could remove the acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Damagun, an ally of the FCT Minister.

To pave the way for Damagun’s removal and his proper replacement, former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, who had instituted a legal action against his removal has withdrawn the case from court.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ugo Chinyere, has also declared that the caucus has not endorsed Alhaji Damagun.

Wike’s and Atiku’s camps have been embroiled in a tussle over which camp controls the PDP leadership.

Many observers had said the matter which had reached a critical stage would be decided at Thursday’s NEV meeting.

Meanwhile, at the end of the NEC meeting, the party announced the extension of the tenure of the acting chairman Umar Damagun.

The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba.
